blackberry z30 970x0 BlackBerry Announces the Z30 Smartphone
While the BB10 OS was meant to turn the smartphone battle into a four-horse race, the response of the phones running it so far has been lukewarm. Lack of quality apps and high price have plagued the sales of the OS and as the market has become more and more saturated with time, there’s really not that much of a need for another mobile OS.
Still, the company has taken to the challenge by announcing its 4th smartphone running BB10 called the Z30. The smartphone isn’t radically different from the Z10 and comes with a larger display and SnapDragon S4 Pro processor.
The design of the phone is based on the Z10 and comes with no hardware buttons at the front. The 5 inch 720p display takes up a large part of it with the speaker, front 2 mp HD camera and a notification LED at the top. The display is a Super AMOLED panel.
The processor inside is of Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 Pro variety, clocked at 1.7Ghz. It’s followed by 2 GB of RAM, Adreno 320 GPU and 16 GB of storage, which also happens to be expandable this time.
The camera at the back is the same 8 megapixel unit with LED Flash and 1080p Full HD video. For connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi and LTE are used.
There are some minor changes compared to the previous smartphones though. Running OS version 10.2, it comes with BB Priority Hub which is BlackBerry’s take on Gmail’s Priority Inbox and this time, the BB10 messages can be sent without having to close the current running app. Incoming messages can be seen directly from the lockscreen, while support for Wi-Fi Direct and multiple alarms is also home.
The 10.2 update is coming to the Q10 and Z10 smartphones in October.
Here are the full specs of the BlackBerry Z30:
  • BlackBerry 10.2 OS running
  • 5 inch 720p display with 1280 x 720 resolution
  • 9.4mm thick
  • 1.7Ghz Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 Pro, Adreno 320
  • 2 GB RAM with 16GB expandable storage
  • 8 megapixel back-camera with LED Flash, f2.2 aperture and 1080p Full HD video recording
  • 2 megapixel HD front-camera
  • Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi, LTE
  • 2880 mAh battery
The phone is expected to hit the markets in the coming few weeks. Pricing is unknown as of now.

Jolla Phone, Compatible with Android Apps, Made by Ex-Nokia Employees, Revealed, mobileshippo

widejolladevices2 Jolla Phone, Compatible with Android Apps, Made by Ex Nokia Employees, Revealed
It has been almost 4 months since the Jolla phone running on Sailfish OS surfaced but its full specs are only being revealed now. The phone made by a small group of ex-Nokia employees (their company is also called Jolla) has been inspired by the great Nokia N9, and its abandoned Meego OS taken by the team to make Sailfish OS which runs on the Jolla.
One of the biggest benefits which this Linux-based OS will bring will be Android app capability. So while it is new, the OS won’t face any lack of apps. How well they’ll run is another point however.
As for the hardware, it comes with a 4.5 inch Estrade Display with qHD resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. Under the hood, it will boast a 1.4Ghz Qualcomm SnapDragon processor with 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB worth internal storage which will be expandable.
At the back sits an 8 megapixel camera with an LED Flash. At the front is also a 2 megapixel camera. A 2100 mAh battery will power up the Jolla.
Perhaps one of the team’s biggest achievement is the tight integration between the software and the hardware. The phone’s backplate comes in four different colours (red, orange, light blue and white). As soon as any of those are changed, the software of the phone updates itself with that particular color scheme. For example, if you’ve installed a red backplate on the back of your Jolla, the OS will turn into red, or shades of red too.
This peculiar feature prompted this small team of engineers to run an extensive online campaign termed “I am the other half”. And of course, the OS itself is gesture-based, given the inspiration and the history (that is, the N9 and Meego.)
When it will hit the markets at the end of the year, it will cost around 400 Euros or around 60,000 PKR. That’s a lot of money of course but fans of Meego should definitely give it a go if they feel adventurous (or if they want to stand out from the usual crowd of iPhones, Galaxies and Lumias.)

GSM SIM Card is Finally Hacked, Puts 750 Million Users at Risk, mobileshippo

SIM Card Hack GSM SIM Card is Finally Hacked, Puts 750 Million Users at Risk
The SIM was one of the few common things in tech which were considered impossible to hack. Until now. Karsten Nohl of Security Research Labs (based out of Germany) has finally got a way past the 56-digit unique code and found a simple process which leaves an estimated 750 million SIM cards at risk.
The research was done on a 1000 SIM cards and only the ones which were using the old DES (Data Encryption Standard) standard were found vulnerable. Cracking them is super-easy and takes just 2 minutes. A message is sent to the target SIM card while disguised as the carrier. In response, a message is received containing information needed to find a way past the 56-digit code or the digital key which can allow the hacker to take control of the target SIM.
After getting this information and taking control, the intruder can easily listen to your calls, send text messages and in short, have control over every form of data on your SIM card.
Mr. Nohl said:
“We can spy on you. We know your encryption keys for calls. We can read your S.M.S.’s. More than just spying, we can steal data from the SIM card, your mobile identity, and charge to your account.”
In all, about 25% of the SIM cards which were tested were found susceptible to such penetration. Newer technologies like NFC might be at risk too.
D.E.S. encryption, which is vulnerable to such hacks – is used on about half of the about six billion cellphones. Over the past decade, most operators have adopted a stronger encryption method, called Triple D.E.S., but many SIM cards still run the old standard.
The GSM Association hasn’t confirmed this just yet though as it will investigate the case first but if this, in any way is true, it will pose some serious threats to people using SIM card for much more complex purposes than calling and texting. Mobile payments that is.

Breaking: PTA Orders Telcos to Stop All Kind of Voice and SMS Packages.mobileshippo

Unknown | 05:07 | Be the first to comment!

Update:

It appears that the telecom sector was yesterday stormed with the biggest ever mis-understanding, as a directive coming from PTA ordered telecom operators to dis-continue Voice and SMS Packages. Same was interpreted by media and the telecom operators with whom we had confirmed the directive.
However, it is now emerging that that only voice and SMS chat rooms are to get blocked, and the usual SMS bundles and voice bundles that telecom companies offer are going to remain intact.
—————————————
Yes, you read it right. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has directed all telecom operators to dis-continue all kind of voice and SMS bundles that are offered for any time of the day.
Telecom companies are asked to stop all kind of Voice and SMS bundles, that include daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly packages by September 2nd, 2013 and submit a compliance report to the authority.
The letter from PTA, a copy of which is produced below, has made the social morality as a reason for the stoppage of voice and SMS bundles. The letter that reads “Directive Relating to Packages Offered by CMTOs Contrary to Moral Values of Society” reasons a survey conducted in November 2012 which suggested PTA that voice and SMS bundles were still active.
Taking the timely decision, PTA has now ordered the operators to stop the packages at once.
Omar Manzoor, Director Communications and CSR at Mobilink confirmed ProPakistani that his company received the directive late today. He said that Mobilink is reviewing the directive and will act accordingly.
Telecom operators are still unsure on how to react. Bigger operators are considerably happy about the directive which is a blessing in disguise for them. Smaller operators, such as Zong and Warid are furious for apparent reasons.
Analysts say currently the industry is derived by these voice and SMS bundles. If not reversed, the whole dynamics of telecom industry of Pakistan will change.
Conspiracy theorist say that PTA has made the case of banning the voice and SMS bundles on moral values, which is likely to be influenced by operators. They say that if operators don’t react on the decision then its apparent that this step is endorsed by the operators.
Other experts even question PTA’s ability to decide the pricing structure this way, especially when there’s no chairman or member at PTA’s head office.
Decision is a nightmare for the end users. The good old days are just gone. Now pay for each call and each SMS.
P.S. There’s no mention of Mobile internet bundles in the directive, which are likely to continue.

The chief guest on the occasion was the honorable President of Pakistan, Mr. Mamnoon Hussain.
Zong, part of the China Mobile – largest Telecom operator in the world, started its operations only a few years back in 2008, has taken a giant leap in the competitive market of telecom services by introducing customer centric services for different segments of mobile phone users.
Having earned the image of #1 in customer services, Zong continues to expand its network at exponential rate and is now offering the 2nd widest coverage in the country. The ‘Fastest Growing Cellular Network’ Award is yet another milestone for Zong in addition to the ‘Most Progressive Telecom Company’ Award that it received last year by RCCI.
Annual Achievement Awards Ceremony is a yearly feature of RCCI, designed to acknowledge the performance and achievements of members of the business community. The selection of Zong yet again is solely based on its exemplary business performance in the field of telecom.

With the preference of 53% customers in 2012 in the entire industry, Zong remains the telecom operator of choice in Pakistan. With the passage of time, Zonghas not only managed to attract a fair share of the market but has also invested billions of dollars in Pakistan.
By growing its operations, CMPak is also creating employment opportunities for the talented people of Pakistan. The company has generated more than 3000 direct and over 40,000 indirect jobs in the country.

iPhone 4S Launched (Specification + Price in Pakistan,iphone 4s Specification,mobileshippo

iphone 4s thumb Apple Launches iPhone 4S [Specifications + Price]
After long drawn speculation about which iPhone model would be unveiled, Apple has launched the iPhone 4S at the “Lets talk iPhone” event today.
No mention of the redesigned iPhone 5, by the way. Design wise, the iPhone 4S looks just like the iPhone 4, but hardware wise it’s all new.
Here’s a quick rundown of the features it’s boasting:
Overview:
Apple is calling iPhone 4s as world phone. It supports both GSM and CDMA network and comes in both black and white color with same prices. As mentioned above, Apple didn’t redesign iPhone this time – iPhone 4S looks exactly like iPhone 4 – however, there are plenty of upgrades in terms of hardware (and software obviously).
Processor:
It’ll run on a scaled down version of the dual core A5 chip (which is the same as the one on the iPad). The graphics are supposed to be seven times better than the iPhone 4 and CPU performance will be double that of its predecessor.
Enhanced Camera:
The camera also gets an improvement. The 8MP unit in the iPhone 4S will have a “five element lens” which will be capable of a resolution of 3264×2448. Photo capture and the rear light will also be faster and brighter respectively.
The phone will be capable of shooting 1080p and feature real time video image stabilization as well, which is a feature new for smartphones. There’s another feature called the Hybrid IR filter, but what everything basically means is that the camera on the iPhone 4S will be a lot better than anything on the previous models.
Battery and Antenna:
Battery timings of the phone, Apple claims, will be up to 8 hours of 3G talk times, 14 hours of 2G talk time, 6 hours of 3G browsing, and 9 hours of Wi-Fi browsing. It seems that Apple took a note from the antenna fiasco with the iPhone 4; the iPhone 4S will feature dual antennas. It will switch between the two to provide the best performance for call quality and download speed.
Siri
One of the features that I’m sure will be talked about a lot is Siri, the intelligent assistant. The idea is that you can ask your phone any question and it will answer it. Questions could be like what the weather is, or you could ask it to read a text message or you could ask it to set an alarm for a specific time. It can even search Wikipedia and Wolfram-Alpha to look for answers to your questions.
Initially it will support English, French and German. But the service is being launched in beta so more services and support will be added later.
Other Features include:
iphone 4s features thumb Apple Launches iPhone 4S [Specifications + Price]
When iPhone 4S is launching?
The launch of the iPhone 4S will be paired with the release of the updated iOS 5 on 12 October. It will include a host of improvements like new notification updates system, wireless updates and twitter integration among others.
Price:
The iPhone 4S will be available in the usual 16GB and 32 GB models as well as a 64 GB model, which is new for Apple.
Prices will be 199$, 299$, and 399$ for the 16, 32 and 64 GB models respectively. The phone will launch on October 14th, with pre-orders starting a week early.
iPhone 4S Prices in Pakistan:
iPhone 4S won’t be available in Pakistan till November 2011, we have confirmed with online retailors. They say price would be around 60,000-65,000; but they haven’t made their minds so far.
Retailors say getting unlocked iPhone, particularly in bulk, won’t be easy compared to earlier iPhone releases. However, they are working their best to make iPhone 4S available in Pakistan. When? it’s still a question for many.
Here are complete specifications for iPhone 4S:

Samsung Display Samsung to Unveil Curved Display Smartphone in October This Year
In an unveiling event for the latest Galaxy devices in South Korea, Samsung chiefs let it be known to the press that their first ever smartphone with a curved display will arrive in October. Unfortunately, no more details were given on the spot but since its less than a week left for September to end, we can wait.
The company has already filed a patent for a device with gentle curves towards the edges.

Of course, who can forget that Samsung has already shown off a prototype phone with an OLED display and curved edges, way back in January. The curved part in that particular instant showed notifications.
Now, you are probably thinking that haven’t this technology already implemented in smartphones such as the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S Advance and the Nexus S already? Well, then your memory skills are commendable but the thing which was unconventional in that instant was the glass, not the screen actually.
But whatever the case, if the ergonomics really are helpful, the technology is incorporated cleverly and (as is the custom with Samsung) not gimmicky, this can truly become the next big thing.

iPhone 5s Apple Reveals iPhone 5S
Apple has ended the one-year wait which starts off for next device just as the latest iPhone is announced.
This year, they made an amendment to the usual tradition by announcing two phones instead of one. The iPhone 5S is the top-of-the-line phone as evident by the ‘S’ and brings some incredible changes to the table.

The Display and Design

The design of the iPhone 5S follows the footsteps of the previous iterations and is made of high-grade aluminum with high-chaffered edges. It will be available in three colors: Black-Slate, White-Silver and White-Gold. One major change comes in the home button.
The button has seen its biggest change ever with a built-in 170 micron thick fingerprint scanner in it, called Touch ID. The technology’s use has been maximized in iOS 7 so alongside usual things like unlocking the device, it can also be used for things like iTunes purchasing verifications and other stuff. Multiple users’ fingerprints can also be memorized.
The iPhone 5S is very slick at just 7.6mm thin and 112g heavy. It’s also very environment-friendly, being made of components which are arsenic-free and mercury-free.
The display of the phone was one thing which was almost completely forgotten in Apple’s event. It’s still a 4 inch Retina with 640 x 1136 resolution. In an age of phablets with the Note III being announced only 6 days back, it’s a bit disappointing that Apple hasn’t enhanced the display. That was undoubtedly one of our bigger expectations.

CPU And Other Internals

The iPhone 5S has seen a major overhaul under the surface. The new chip called the A7 is twice as faster as before and 40 times as faster as the 2G. It does 2 times as many general purpose and floating point registers and packs twice as many transistors (1 Billion) as the A6.
The bigger innovation is that it’s the world’s first 64-bit smartphone processor. It will have support for OpenGL ES 3.0 and Xcode. The A7 will also have 64-bit kernels, libraries and drivers. The graphics are twice as fast as well. Overall, the iPhone 5S is 56 times faster than the original iPhone. Half of that spectacular figure is a direct blessing of A7.
The 64-bit chip is still compatible with the 32-bit apps. Also announced was an M7 chip which looks after motion-sensing in real-time and will be great for fitness apps.
The hardcore capabilities of the iPhone 5S were proven in the dazzling demo of Infinity Blade III which is also the last game of this series.

Software

The iPhone 5S comes with iOS 7 pre-installed, of course. That alone brings quite a lot of change including flat icons, better lockscreen, Control Centre, Notification Centre and a male Siri. Apple also announced that all of its essential editing and productivity apps, i.e. Keynote, iMovie, iPhoto, iWork and Pages and Numbers will be free from now onwards. This offer is limited to new iPhones which will be bought in the future only.
As for the rest of the iPhones, the iOS 7 update is coming on 18 September.

Camera

The iPhone 5S’ camera is still of 8 megapixels with a 5-element lens and f2.2 aperture. The sensor area is 15 percent larger. iOS 7 automatically corrects white balance & exposure balance and creates a local dynamic tone map for a better image.
That’s accompanied by a new dual-LED Flash dubbed “True Tone” which consists of a blue and an amber LED and operates on up to 1000 different levels to make photos appear natural. Auto Image Stabilisation and Burst Modes have also seen an entry with the latter being triggered whenever the shutter icon is held. It shoots at a rate of 10 images per second.
As for the video, the 5S captures 1080p video at 30fps, alongside 720p video at 120fps. Slow Motion videos can also be shot. For doing that, 720p videos are shot first while the portions to be slowed-down are chosen afterwards. A combination of the two can also go along, together. Facetime camera has also been improved to perform better in lowlight.

Miscellaneous

The phone’s battery is of 1440 mAh capacity and provides 3G talk-time of 10 hours and 250 hours of standby. Bluetooth 4.0, LTE, Wi-Fi and Lightning Port are used for connectivity. And as usual, a nano-SIM card is used.

Pricing and Availability

The phone will be available in Pakistan for the usual price tag of around $800 or Rs. 85,000 at launch. This price is likely to go down around Rs. 70,000 with-in one month of the launch. Special covers will cost $39 each. The iPhone 5S, alongside the 5C will be put up for sale on the 20th of September. By the end of 2013, it would’ve hit 100 countries.
The iPhone 5S is the high-point for Apple. A lot of future-proofing has been done this time especially on the inside. Had Apple increased the display size to 4.5 inch, the package might’ve become even more tempting but even without it, the 5S is no slouch by any means.
One more thing to note is that unlike others, Apple hasn’t gotten itself into the numbers race. The camera is still 8 megapixels, screen still Retina. Why fix something which isn’t broken? For that, Apple deserves a pat on the back.
As for the phone itself, we’ll let the sales figures decide.

BlackBerry Sells itself to Fairfax Financial Holding for $4.7 billion, mobileshippo

blackberry logo BlackBerry Sells itself to Fairfax Financial Holding for $4.7 billion
If you thought that the $7.7 billion which Microsoft paid to buy Nokia, a company with such prestige, culture and legacy a small amount of money, listen to this: BlackBerry has been bought by a Canadian company Fairfax Financial Holding for $4.7 billion. (Still, the Canadian company did end up in Canadian hands.)
Fairfax Financial had already held around 10% of BlackBerry’s shares previously. Stockholders will be receiving $9 per share as a part of this deal which will take the company private.
The deal – which is final – is still pending some regulatory requirements as the parties involved will be subjected to six weeks of due diligence, until the 4th of November.
The news might have been a bit of a surprise to hear sometime ago but not now as only yesterday we reported that Blackberry was eyeing a $1 billion loss this quarter and was cutting its workforce by 40 percent.
It’s incredibly ironical as only about half a decade ago, BlackBerry was worth a staggering $100 billion. After the iPhone, its sales actually increased a bit but dived headfirst towards the ground later, a reaction to which is the news you’re reading right now.
Prem Watsa, the Chairman and CEO of Fairfax Financial had something to say however: “We believe this transaction will open an exciting new private chapter for BlackBerry, its customers, carriers and employees,” he said.
“We can deliver immediate value to shareholders, while we continue the execution of a long-term strategy in a private company with a focus on delivering superior and secure enterprise solutions to BlackBerry customers around the world.”

Android Android Turns Five
Earlier this week on Monday, Google’s Android OS turned five and what it has achieved in this remarkably short period of time is really unbelievable: 1 billion activations, a market share of 70% and 50 billion+ app downloads.
That’s a lot considering that half a decade ago, no one had heard about anything called Android.
Well it all started on 23rd September 2008, when Google, HTC and T-Mobile teamed up to announced the T-Mobile G1 (international name HTC Dream), world’s first smartphone running on Android.
It ran on Android 1.0, which was a far cry from today’s 4.3 Jelly Bean. It came without multi-touch, and to the annoyance of the Apple cult, a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard. Still, it did what it was most supposed to do, sow the seed which is a lush, flourishing tree now.

Catching Success

With the emergence of version 2.1 namely Eclairs, Android had improved drastically and was almost equalling the iPhone’s levels. It was then in the first quarter of 2010 that the OS finally started to appear on the charts to takeon iPhone benchmarks.
Early 2010 saw the first Google phone, the Nexus One which ran on Android 2.3 Eclair. The HTC equivalent, HTC Desire also fared fairly well. But it was not until June 2010, when Samsung pulled the covers off the Galaxy S smartphone and then there was no stopping for Android.
Among achievements was being declared the 2nd best gadget of 2010 by none other than the Time (which had given the #1 honours to the iPhone in the past), which had also called 2010 the year of the Android. The iPhone 4 could only manage the 6th position then.
By late 2010, the Android OS had taken the top ranks in global market share from Symbian, other than being updated to Froyo and Gingerbread.
Gingerbread version marked a huge moment in Android. Bringing notable improvements in the usability, it took over the entire market. One drawback was that, since it was used by so many companies on virtually uncountable number of phones from all categories, it still stubbornly accounts for 30% of all Androids.
The next major step was taken in the version Ice Cream Sandwich when onscreen keys were added for the first time. It also marked the first major visual change since Eclair. Later on, Jelly Bean was announced. Jelly Bean is the current Gingerbread, popularizing the OS to unmatched levels.
After Gingerbread, the OS never looked backwards. While Apple’s devices remain almost unmatched in terms of individual sales against competing devices, Android phones and tablets have always sold better when under the common OS flag, thanks to more than 11,000 different devices.
And it’s not limited to the smartphones and tablet industries only. From computers to televisions and game consoles to wrist watches, Android is conquering markets in a way no competitor has never done before.

Timeline

And finally, a rather incomplete (for the history so far is so immensely rich) timeline detailing the important events in Android’s life till now:
  • September 2008: HTC and Google unveil the HTC Dream/T-Mobile G1
  • April 2009: Google unveils Android 1.5 Cupcake, the first notable OS version
